Group - Animatic

Animatic:

We constructed our animatic by hand drawing each frame and taking a high quality photo of it using our DSLR camera. We then took each image and edited the sequence in Da Vinci Resolve, matching it to our chosen track.

Our animatic differed from our animatic last year due to the fact that we storyboarded every single shot in our production. We felt like this was important, and had a positive impact on our final production as it meant we had a set plan at every shoot, knowing every single shot we had to shoot, including location, characters and framing.

We believe our animatic was structured well, detailing the entire narrative sequence of our production. We believe the main difference between the animatic of a music video and the storyboarding of a film, is the fast cutting rate and continuous cutting between too parallel lines of action. This difference mainly comes about due to the lack of dialogue in a music video, meaning that frequent cutting between different lines isn't too disjunctive/ doesn't effect the narratives flow negatively.

Group: Printwork feedback

Feedback (Digipak)
  • There is a prominent use of the two characters in each panel of the digipak. Remember that it is for the album, not the song
  • The contrast between colour images and black and white images is a good idea, but may isolate the two characters, so a panel dedicated to linking the two characters, possibly with the use of colour selection may be effective
  • A multi-panel image of the external location of the music video could be effective on the inside
  • The panel that is meant to have information about the song will now have a tracklist instead due to the digipak being for an album not the single
Feedback (Advertisement)
  • DJ magazine is an appropriate choice
  • Good research done into the magazine, for example, finding out they did a top 100 DJs list
  • Appropriate colour schemes used in the magazine
  • Meat shot of artist on front cover of magazine, however the inside ads do not necessarily conform to this
  • Consider the type of font you will use, and the colour of it against the colour and black and white mix of the image

DC: Reflection 4

Tasks:

Continue Editing

I decided to place a Letterbox effect on our final production to increase the visceral pleasure achieved from our footage.

Step 1

The first step was to go to the Colour Page on Da Vinci Resolve, and change the editing mode to timeline. This meant that the edit I made would be applied to every shot in the timeline, as opposed to the specific selected shot

Step 2

The second step was to edit the blanking on the timeline. In order to achieve a 2.35: 1 cinematic crop, I worked out the maths:

1920 divided by 2.35 = 818
1080 - 818 = 262
262 divided by 2 = 131 (TOP NUMBER)
1080 - 131 = 949  (BOTTOM NUMBER)

After applying a 131 crop to the top of the shot, and a 949 crop to the bottom, I achieved a 2.35: 1 cinematic crop

DC: Party Scene casting

Our Party Scene consists of 10 extras, all situated inside of a Interior location:

Equipment:
-Jib- we'll use the jib to construct smooth shots that move through the party scene
-Track/ Dolly- The Track is crucial for our main shot within the Party scene, as it tracks the 2 protagonists as they walk past eachother

Organisation of Characters:
-Several of the cast members have acting experience, furthermore several have been involved in similar 'party scenes' within other Coursework Productions
-The Cast members are all friends of ours, therefore organisation should be relatively easy
-The open aspect of the location will allow for enough space to organise the characters, and use the equipment, furthermore it will allow enough space to shoot our shots that track through the party

DC: Reflection 3

Date: 08/11/2016

Objectives:

  • Research digipaks and magazines related to the genre of music
  • Start editing concept art for digipak
  • Plan shoot for party scene

Actions taken:
  • Researched DJ magazine further (established in an earlier post)
  • Matched colour schemes of the magazine and our artist
  • Experimented with colour effects on photoshop that fit this colour scheme
  • Experimented with mixing colour image with black and white images. A good contrast between them is made, but they need to have similar contrasts and the same light/dark overlay
  • Worked with Dan to organise the cast we have to film the party scene

DC: Reflection 3

Date:07/11/16

Aims:
-Complete Rough Cut
-Begin rough colour grading of footage (further experimenting with Greyscale effects)
-Plan Shoot

Progress:
-We completed the rough cut to the best of our ability, despite the limitations due to lack of footage/ time constraints. The rough cut reflected the quality of our footage, however it didn't fully represent our narrative due to the lack of key shots

-During the process of developing our rough cut, I began to apply some of the colour grading techniques I had previously experimented with to the footage. I found that the colour grading effects were viscerally pleasing and suited the tone/ mood of the footage well. However I believe that they require further tweaking to ensure they are perfect

-I also completed the planning of our Next shoot. The shoot features 2 cast-members in several different location. I completed location Recces at each location to ensure they were suitable for the shoot/ fit with the rest of the video

EC: Reflection 2

Date;

Task: Respond to feedback on pitch

Progress in lesson:
  • Received and discussed feedback of our pitch with the class and teacher
  • Noted the feedback and translated it on to the blog
  • Identified tasks that needed to be done in order to improve our pitch based on the feedback
  • Allocated tasks in our group to respond to the feedback

DC: Reflection 2

Date:

Tasks:

- Begin to place footage on timeline
-Finalize edit of Brighton short/ upload
-Finalize edit of Animatic/ upload

Placed footage from Brighton shoot #1 onto timeline and begun to sort them into order

Finalized the colour grade of the Brighton short/ watched through to ensure their weren't any mistakes. Uploaded onto Youtube

Finalized the edit of the Animatic, reviewing it to ensure all frames fit with the song/ flowed into eachother well

EC: Reflection 1

Date:

Objectives:

  • Complete Print-work ideas post
Progress in lesson:
  • Described intentions of the survey
  • Explained expectations and hopes of survey responses
  • Collected results from SurveyMonkey
  • Analysed graphical depictions of the results
  • Compared the results to our ideas
Some of the results for the survey did not comply with the answers we hoped for in order for them to agree with our ideas.
We then decided whether we should change our ideas accordingly to the results collected
We decided that there was only one disagreement to our original ideas. We overlooked this as it was too impractical to input into our music video

DC: Reflection 1

Date:

Tasks:
-Complete storyboarding for final piece
-Take photos of Storyboard frames
-Begin editing the animatic

Task 1:

Completed drawing up the storyboards, ensuring that the frames coincided with the music/ the beat
Emphasized cut on beat/ visuals relating to the musical content (e.g. increase of cutting rate as narrative progressses)

Task 2:
Took a high quality photo of each frame, ensuring framing of photo remains the same to ensure the animatic remains smooth/ the images don't 'jump' around the screen

Task 3:
Began editing the animatic, using my notes on timings per frame to ensure the animatic/ the cuts between frames flows well
