The music video I will be analysing is 'Counting Stars' (One Republic)
Goodwin's theory emphasises that the conventions of each music video fit to the genre of the song. The genre of my chosen song is 'Teen pop'.
The video is conventional to the genre in the fact that the majority of the shots are band shots and meat shots, keeping with the strong star image of the band. The other predominant type of shot is of a seperate line of action, which amplifies certain lyrics, such as,"old but I'm not that old" by following a mini-narrative of an older man, and also a shot of a crocodile matched with the lyric "
The colour scheme of the video is also conventional as there is a low contrast and a dark colour scheme, consisting of mainly grey colours, which removes attention from the background and focuses it on the band.
The editing of the video is more unconventional, as a convention of this genre is to cut shots on the beat, which the video does in the band shots, but not in the shots of the narrative. However, the cutting rate is conventional in the d=fact that it increases as the song crescendos or climaxes.
A convention used in this video is the notion of looking, as the band adress the camera during the band shot, connecting with and engaging the audience.
The location is important as it isolates the band from civilisation, making them seem differeent, which is an important part of their metanarrative.
The urban/plain costume of the band fits with their metanarrative, and with the metanarrative of the genre.
In conclusion, this video conforms to the majority of the conventions of the teen pop genre, and in the process strengthen the band's metanarrative.
