The Metanarrative of CHVRCHES:
- Lauren Mayberry is the lead vocalist, and is portrayed as an 'average' woman, done by the lack of sexualisation of her. She is seen as the lead member of the group
- Martin Doherty and Iain Cook play instruments in the band. They often wear dark clothes in order to shift the attention to Lauren
- The main focus of the group is on their songs, not their personalities
- All three performers keep the same costumes throughout the music video. Lauren's costume consists of a bright white, whilst Iain and Martin are both wearing dark, black clothes. This makes Lauren the centre of attention, and strenghtens her star image as the leader of the group
- There are a lot of meatshots throughout the video, which are distributed evenly between the three artists, certifying their equal importance in the band. This makes the audience believe the band treat eachother equally, and are friends, creating para-social intimacy between the group and audience
- The music video can be interpreted to be an a amplifying one, focusing on the line "Did you see another lifetime". This is because of the visual effects. They create the effect of a dremworld or alternate dimension, which conforms to the electro genre of the music
- The visual effects are also used in transitions between shots, which creates repeatability in the video, as the audience may enjoy the creative transitions. This can also possibly make the viewer watch the video multiple time sin order to make sense of the transitions and effects
- The album cover conforms with the group's metanarrative that the focus is on the performances of the group, not their personalities, as the album cover does not feature a picture of any of them
- The style of shape conforms with the electronic genre, as it is a symmetrical pattern, with contrasting colours. this creates an element of excitement towards the album
- It can be seen as artwork, which reflects the attention focus of their music
To summarise, CHVRCHES are portrayed to be focused on their music, which attracts a target audience, strengthening their fanbase
Well done, a solid start. you show some understanding of Dyer, but to improve you would need to add more detail to introducing concept, and use some still frames to illustrate your points. I think that you could analyse visual signifiers such as female dancer, psychedelic graphics, mirroring and repetition, 80s retro style? Also, more detailed semiotic analysis of the print text and links to the video. Currently low L3.
